2010 Student Design Awards

SPOT LIGHT
On Tuesday March 30, 2010, the AIA West Jersey Chapter held it annual Student Design Competition at the Haddon Fortnightly in Haddonfield, NJ. Each year, our chapter invites the faculty and staff of the four local architectural schools from Temple University, Drexel University, Philadelphia University, and University of Pennsylvania to select a non-thesis student to present their semester project to our jury and membership.

This year’s candidates included:
Andrew Waxtel – Temple University
An art museum located near the Ben Franklin Parkway

Erin Avery – Drexel University
A retail/mixed use building located on a vacant lot near Drexel’s campus

Mark Gushanas, Jr. – Philadelphia University
A diving center, pool and café located on a tight urban site along the Schuylkill River

Kristen Smith – University of Pennsylvania
Design for a new skyscraper in NYC.

In the end, it was extremely difficult to choose the winner. Mark and Andrew each received Honorable Mention awards and scholarship money in the amount of $250 each. Erin and Kristen scored even and it took the committee additional time to declare the winner. Kristen scored 2nd place and a $500 scholarship, while Erin was crowned the winner and received a check for $1,250.
