AIA South Jersey/AIA West Jersey Joint Meeting – Sept. 29, 2015

DSC_0981It was a joint AIA South Jersey/AIA West Jersey event. The event was well attended by both sections and included members of AIA New Jersey leadership. Attendees were informed of upcoming events and programing including the AIA New Jersey State Convention (10/23-10/24), AIA West Jersey CEPA Group Lecture Series (10/13) and upcoming General Dinner Meetings for both sections – stay tuned for additional information.

The featured program for the evening was ‘Using Social Media and Houzz to Promote Your Business’ presented by Skylar Schock. Attendees learned hands-on how to set up a Houzz profile and optimize the page for high visibility on the site.  Already have a Houzz page? Link your page to AIA South Jersey and AIA West Jersey Houzz pages.

The sponsors for the evening were Smart Vent, represented by David Sonner, and GAF Roofing, represented by Greg Ring, Mike Kenefic, and Mike Kearny.

In addition to all the programming, attendees received door prizes including: books on architecture, AIA-West Jersey polo shirts and fantastic coffee donated by Shackleton Coffee.

Philadelphia Walking Tour – Saturday Sept. 19, 2015

A group of 16 AIA Members and guests toured several historic buildings during the AIA West Jersey Philadelphia Walking Tour on Saturday Sept. 19.  The tour was led by Richard Frey of Your Philadelphia Tour, LLC, a very knowledgeable guide who narrated the history and geography of the Philadelphia landmarks and delivered us a better understanding of the city and the region.

The tour included a visit to the 34th floor of the PSFS Building and the observation deck of City Hall where we saw stunning views of Center City Philadelphia. In addition to City Hall and and the PSFS building we also paid a visit to the Reading Terminal Train Shed which is now part of the Philadelphia Convention Center.

AIA West Jersey Committee for Emerging Professionals in Architecture – August 20, 2015 Meeting

no-thumbOn August 20, 2015 the AIA West Jersey Committee for Emerging Professionals in Architecture (CEPA) held an informative lecture for its members.  The speaker was Gary Chiumento, Esq. of the law firm Chiumento McNally LLC.  Chiumento McNally, LLC is a law firm dedicated to providing the highest quality legal services for the business and professional community. The firm specializes in commercial transactions and litigation with a focus on the construction industry and design professionals.

Gary is an expert in the legal aspects of the profession and presented several topics of interest for the intern and licensed architect alike, including: Forming a Business Entity, Appropriate Insurance Coverage, Limiting Liability for Projects and Tips for Getting Fees Paid.

The presentation was held at the Taproom and Grille in Haddon Township.  The presentation was an informative one and spawned lively discussion that continued well past the scheduled end date.

AIA West Jersey also welcomed two additional special guests: Nicholas Caravella, Assoc. AIA the NJ Region Associate Director and Ryan Day, AIA the Young Architect Regional Director. Nick and Ryan revealed plans for a new State Emerging Professionals Committee and seeks individuals to take on this great leadership opportunity. Keep an eye on your email for additional details.

The role of the committee will be to offer support and guidance to local sections for providing programming and resources to their Emerging Professionals. They will be the open line between Emerging Professionals and State leadership. There will be five (5) positions on this committee. Call for Interest – State Emerging Professionals Committee

Committee for Emerging Professionals in Architecture (CEPA) Members,

Nick-CaravellaAIA New Jersey is creating the first inaugural State Emerging Professionals Committee and is looking for individuals to take on this great leadership opportunity.  The role of the committee will be to offer support and guidance to local sections for providing programming and resources to their Emerging Professionals. They will be the open line between Emerging Professionals and State leadership.  There will be five (5) positions on this committee.

Please consider this tremendous leadership opportunity for young architects.  Additional information, including detailed descriptions of the positions, will be emailed to CEPA members in the near future.

Philadelphia Walking Tour

city hallWe’re happy to announce the AIA-WJ Philadelphia Walking Tour scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2015. The tour will include the PSFS Building (upper floor, lobby and exterior), the old Reading Terminal Train Depot and Philadelphia’s City Hall. The tour will begin at 10:30 am and will end at approximately 12:30 pm at the Reading Terminal Market where members can have lunch on their own. Because of the nature of the tour we are limited to only 30 participants. Registration will be on a first come first served basis. Cost will be $25 for AIA members and $35 for non-members. The tour will provide 2 CEUs. (Pending) Members should RSVP to John Glaviano at JGlaviano@KitchenandAssociates.com.
