AIA West Jersey Volunteers Help Rebuild a Local Playground

On Saturday, April 30, members of AIA West Jersey assisted in a community service project of rebuilding a playground at Fullerton Park in Moorestown, NJ.

Fullerton Park is located in the heart of Moorestown and has been a community based park for decades. The original play set and surrounding fixtures were installed in 1992 by local residents in memory of Frank Fullerton, a Moorestown police officer, who was tragically killed in the line of duty in 1979. Time had taken its toll on the playground, and the Township recently identified significant safety and health issues with the playground. It was time for the playground to be replaced.

Leathers & Associates, who specialize in community-built playgrounds, designed the Fullerton Park playground, and provided supervision for the project. AIA West Jersey members were divided into several teams, each working on a section of the playground with other community volunteers.

The playground was completed on the following day and children immediately enjoyed the result of the volunteer’s efforts. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their Saturday for this worthwhile effort.

Dear Fellow AIA West Jersey Members:

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as President of the American Institute of Architects, West Jersey Section for 2011. It is hard to believe that the year has come and gone so fast.

When I joined the Executive Board five years ago, I was determined to get involved and make a difference. Despite the downturn in the global economy, our Chapter continues to grow, generate new membership and creative ideas. Our strongest growth has been experienced in our young associates division, now known as the Committee of Emerging Professionals in Architecture (CEPA). Under the leadership of Bob O’Reilly, Jim Del Grosso and Jason Lutz, we have assembled over 40 young and emerging professionals within our jurisdiction. We have provided study aids for the for the A.R.E. exams, mentoring opportunities, assisted with IDP requirements, and created a forum in which CEPA and our members can interact. Our young professionals are the future of our organization and we must continue to support their needs and efforts. Our profession depends upon them.

Over the past 12 months, we have worked hard to re-tool our Section in order to meet the needs of our changing profession. I am proud of the efforts that our Executive Board.

2011 AIA West Jersey Fall Trip to the Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C.

AIA West Jersey hosted a trip to the National Mall’s West Potomac Park in Washington, DC on Saturday October 1st. Twenty AIA members from West Jersey, South, Shore and Newark/Suburban along with five spouses made the trip to the site of this year’s U S Dept. of Energy 2011 Solar Decathlon. It is an award winning program that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar powered houses. The winner of the competition is the one that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. This year’s overall winner was the University of Maryland. Each structure, between 600 – 1000 square feet, was required to be transported for assembly to Washington, DC. Although the weather did not completely cooperate with rain, and wind temperatures in the 50’s it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the group and AIA West Jersey is hoping to repeat the trip to the 2013 Solar Decathlon. Congratulations to Team New Jersey and the students at NJIT on their Zero Energy Home design being showcased at the 2011 Solar Decathlon!
